Me and Linux

It has been pretty slow this week and so I wanted to write about my experiences with Linux. I have tried Linux quite a few times and I have to say that I just don't like it. Its a lot of work and just not fun. I usually describe it as DOS on steroids. All of the power is in the command line and the GUIs aren't much fun.
One of my main problems is I can't get anything to install. I think I have to make sure the version I am using is compatible with the version of Linux I am using. I tried Corel Linux and it was really easy to install. I kept hearing about how people couldn't get the OS to install and I thought that would be my biggest worry. I did try Puppy Linux and I kinda like it. But I still can't figure out how to update and install software. Is Red Hat the most popular Linux? Should I go with them if I want the best compatibility? Is Fedora still Red Hat?
I also tried to take a Linux class at my jr. college and it killed me. The teacher didn't make the class fun at all. ridicule was common. Plus we were using Sun Solaris which I didn't know anything about. Oh and when we got to the VI editor I lost it. It really felt like an arcane text editor and a very hard one at that.
The one version of Linux I like is Apple's OSX. Man I never have to even touch the terminal. I can do everything in OSX that I need to do. Maybe someday I can afford a mac. Right now living off of $400 a month doesn't make it easy. I am just glad my student loan can pay my rent.

You have two choices.
1) If you can download a rpm file, then type "rpm -i nameofprogram.rpm" from a shell window, then I suggest you try the next Java Desktop System (JDS) R3 when it ships in about a month from Sun (www.sun.com/javadesktopsystem/). Don't believe the "Sun is killing its linux" doomsday preachers. Version 3 will ship.
Then find apps on www.gcclinux.com
2) If you want to avoid all that, try LINSPIRE 5.0 (www.linspire.com). It's the MacOS-X of linuxes, for people with "point and click" brains. ;)
It even plays windows media natively thanks to a ported version of WMP which they licenced from the Evil Empire.
3) "Installing applications is difficult" is one broad generalization that is simply not true. It depends on the application!. For instance, I bought Sun's StarOffice 7. Took the cd, placed the cd in the drive, executed the installer, and it installs through a graphical installer just like any windows application (or the windows version of StarOffice).
